The M60 Patton evolved from the M48 and became the primary battle tank of the U.S. Army and Marine Corps. Its 105mm gun gave it a clear edge over its predecessor and could reliably penetrate the increasingly common Soviet T-54.

Armor protection was significantly improved by redesigning the front hull shape and increasing thickness in key areas.

New Technology: The M60 paired a highly accurate gun with state-of-the-art rangefinders and ballistic computers to help gunners land shots on target.

Infra-Red: With an infrared searchlight and gunner’s periscopes American forces had a much better chance of firing first during night engagements.
